TURN-TAKING SKILLS IN DIALOGUE (KCSE ENGLISH PAPER 1)

CLASS: FORM TWO

ORAL SKILLS: LISTENING AND SPEAKING

SKILLS OF ATTENTION AND TURN TAKING THROUGH DIALOGUE

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to:

  a)        Identify clues that a conversation partner has finished speaking

  b)        Tell when it’s their turn to speak in a dialogue.

Whenever we have a dialogue/conversation with other people, we need to take turns in order to have a fruitful conversation.

A turn is when one of the speakers is talking and the other listens.

Turn -taking is the skill of knowing when to start and finish a turn in a conversation.

When the speaker is talking we need to pay keen attention in order to know when it is our turn to speak.

We can do this by picking clues from the speaker.

Turn taking skills in Dialogue

Clues that a speaker has finished speaking

·        Pay close attention to the speaker’s intonation. When a speaker asks a yes-no question then they use a rising intonation. A falling intonation implies that the speaker has finished speaking.

·        Pay attention to the speaker’s body language and gestures since it may show that their turn is over e.g. a speaker may point or face in your direction.

·        Try to predict when the speaker may complete their points.

·        Listen attentively for when the speaker pauses so that you can pick up the cue to speak.

·        Pay attention to utterances such as "mm" "you know" "um" or "ah". They are known as fillers and may give you a hint to butt in politely.

Turn taking skills

·        Avoid rude interruption (interrupt politely, if need be)

·        Wait for your turn to speak

·        Agree or disagree politely

·        Use polite language

·        Listen carefully as the speaker makes their point
