POLITE INTERRUPTION (DISAGREEING POLITELY)

Typically it is rude (impolite) to interrupt or cut someone short when they are still speaking ,however, polite interruption is an important skill since some situations force you to interrupt the speaker.

When you feel the need to say something before the speaker has finished speaking you should do so politely. It is possible to do it without appearing rude.

Instances where you may be forced to interrupt the speaker

·        When a speaker says something which is incorrect.

·        If you did not hear what the speaker said and you need them to repeat.

·        When the speaker skips or omits some known facts.

·        When you need the speaker to clarify on some information.

·        When the speaker monopolizes a discussion and it is somebody else’s turn to speak.

·        When you agree or disagree strongly with the speaker.

When you interrupt politely you appear gracious and thoughtful before others.

How to interrupt politely

1.  Always use polite language. Introduce your interruption in a polite manner with phrases such as, “I am afraid I don’t agree with you” “Do you mind if I add something?” “Excuse me” “I beg your pardon”.

2.  Be objective. Avoid attaching personal feelings. You should have specific reason for interrupting. State the reason genuinely using a sincere tone

3.  Wait until the person speaking pauses before interrupting. Do not cut the speaker when they are still talking. Here proper timing is key.

4.  Show gratitude to others for allowing you to interrupt by thanking them when you finish talking.

5.  Listening carefully before airing your views.

6.  You can gesture the speaker by using eye contact or raising your hand in order to get their attention before interrupting.

7.  You can capture attention by clearing your throat and when everyone is quiet you make your point.

8.  In a meeting or discussion, always channel your interruption through the chair of the meeting.
