Bowing and curtsying 

Objective

By the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to: 

    i.        Recognise the different ways of showing respect

  ii.        Bow and curtsy in appropriate places.

 

Bowing is lightly bending your body forward in greeting, expressing gratitude after a performance or as a sign of respect.

Curtsying (For women) is bending quickly at the knees with one foot in front of the other while touching your skirt as a sign of respect. 


 

Which ways do you use to show respect to people who are senior to you or those who are older than you? 

 

Different ways of showing respect

1.  Bowing and curtsying 

2.  Using courteous titles e.g. Mr. Mrs. His Excellency, Your Majesty, Your Lordship.

 

Some places/occasion in which people bow or curtsy

·         When you introduce your item before a performance (e.g. during music or drama festival)

·         When greeting older people or someone you respect

·         After receiving an award or a present

·         When an important guest is introduced

·         In courtrooms 

·         In parliament

·         In some places of worship like altars
